In a bid to de-escalate tensions and foster stability in the Horn of Africa region, Kenyan President William Ruto announced on Saturday that he, along with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, would mediate between Ethiopia and Somalia amidst a brewing dispute. The conflict arose when landlocked Ethiopia proposed to build a port in the breakaway region of Somaliland, causing friction with the Mogadishu government.

Somaliland, seeking possible recognition as an independent nation from Ethiopia in return for the port, has long strived for international acknowledgment despite governing itself effectively since declaring independence in 1991. This issue not only strained relations between Ethiopia and Somalia but also drew Somalia closer to Egypt and Eritrea, two long-standing rivals of Ethiopia.

President Ruto emphasized the importance of Somali security in maintaining regional stability and creating an environment conducive for investment and economic growth. Despite several unsuccessful attempts to resolve the dispute in Ankara, Turkey, a potential breakthrough remains elusive.

While Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud engaged in discussions with Ruto and Museveni during a regional summit, his office did not explicitly mention mediation efforts. Somalia's Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi expressed skepticism about previous resolutions falling on deaf ears in Addis Ababa but remained hopeful that ongoing mediation efforts, particularly by Turkey, could yield positive results.

As of now, there has been no official response from Ethiopia’s government or its foreign affairs officials. The situation remains delicate, with the involvement of key regional leaders offering a glimmer of hope for a peaceful resolution to the escalating tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia.
