In a landmark decision that marks the end of a decade-long legal battle, former FIFA President Sepp Blatter and French soccer legend Michel Platini have been acquitted of corruption charges by a Swiss court. The ruling, which came after Swiss federal prosecutors appealed their earlier acquittal, absolves the once-influential soccer figures of any wrongdoing in relation to a disputed 2 million Swiss franc payment.

The payment, authorized by Blatter for Platini in 2011, had been at the center of the corruption allegations. The prosecution had claimed that the payment was fraudulent, alleging that both men had deceived FIFA staff about an obligation for the soccer organization to pay Platini for advisory work. However, the court found that there were doubts about the prosecution's assertion and ultimately cleared Blatter and Platini of any wrongdoing.

Throughout the legal proceedings, both Blatter and Platini maintained their innocence, arguing that the payment was for legitimate consultancy work conducted between 1998 and 2002. The court noted that the pair's consistent accounts of the payment, along with Platini's experience and the circumstances surrounding the payment, raised doubts about the prosecution's case.

For Platini, the ruling signifies a long-awaited vindication. The former UEFA president expressed relief that the legal saga, which he believed was orchestrated to derail his ambitions of leading FIFA, had finally come to an end. He highlighted the overwhelming support he had received during the ordeal and welcomed the return of the confiscated funds.

Blatter, visibly emotional after the judgement, expressed gratitude that the legal ordeal that had loomed over him for a decade was now behind him. The 89-year-old former FIFA chief emphasized the sense of relief the ruling brought him, allowing him to finally move on from the legal turmoil that had clouded his legacy.

As the Swiss attorney general's office considers whether to appeal the verdict, the decision by the Swiss court marks a significant turning point in the tumultuous legal battle that had tarnished the reputations of two towering figures in global soccer.
