US President Joe Biden has expressed confidence that the Democrats and Republicans will be able to reach an agreement on the US debt limit, despite the recent tensions in the negotiations. Speaking in Hiroshima, Japan, Biden downplayed concerns about a possible catastrophic US default, saying that there are always hiccups in negotiations and that the two sides can bridge their differences.

Biden's optimism was in contrast to the tone struck by White House officials, who had highlighted the real differences between the two sides and called on Republicans to negotiate in good faith. The talks had been making progress until the Republicans walked out of negotiations on Friday, shattering hopes of a deal and sending stocks tumbling. However, the White House and GOP officials resumed meetings late on Friday and planned to reconvene on Saturday.

Despite the resumption of talks, there are still major hurdles to clear before a deal can be reached. Some Republicans have refused to consider raising revenues as part of the budget and debt-limit talks, while demanding deep spending cuts and work requirements for entitlement programs that Democrats oppose.

The debt-limit fight, which could trigger a first-ever US payments default, threatens to inflict pain on the global economy. It has also cast a shadow over Biden's overseas trip, forcing him to postpone travel to Australia and Papua New Guinea to focus on the negotiations in Washington.

Biden apologized to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for the postponement and reiterated his commitment to traveling to Australia in the future. Albanese expressed his understanding of the situation and said he looked forward to attending the state dinner that Biden had invited him to at the White House later this year.

In conclusion, while the negotiations on the US debt limit are still ongoing, Biden's optimism and continued efforts to reach a deal with the Republicans provide hope for a resolution to the crisis and the avoidance of a catastrophic US default.
