Tesla is making its move in the South Korean market by offering Chinese-made Model Y sport utility vehicles at a significantly reduced price. The rear-wheel drive model is now available for 56,990,000 won ($44,000) on Tesla Korea's official website. By taking advantage of government subsidies, the price drops even further to about $37,000 in Seoul and could go as low as $30,000 in certain cities that offer additional incentives for electric vehicles (EVs). Previously, only the more expensive dual-motor performance and long-range versions of the Model Y were available in Korea, with prices ranging from $62,000 to $80,000 respectively last year. Sales officially kicked off on Friday, with deliveries set for August or September.

In terms of pricing, the new Tesla Model Y puts it in direct competition with South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co.'s Ioniq 5 electric SUV, which has a starting price of around 50 million won.

This move by Tesla comes as the demand for clean vehicles, including battery-powered, hybrid, and hydrogen cars, continues to rise in Korea. As of 2022, approximately 6.2% of cars in the country are classified as clean vehicles, a significant increase from previous years. In fact, clean car sales witnessed a remarkable surge of 37.2% last year compared to the previous year, with EVs accounting for nearly 34% of the total. With the introduction of the more affordable Model Y, Tesla aims to tap into this growing market and further accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in Korea.

Tesla's decision to offer a lower-priced model in Korea aligns with its strategy of continuously expanding global market presence and reaching a broader consumer base. By making electric vehicles more accessible and affordable, Tesla aims to make a lasting impact on the transition to sustainable transportation. With the availability of the Model Y at a reduced price, more Korean customers will now have the opportunity to experience the cutting-edge technology, performance, and eco-friendliness that Tesla vehicles offer.

Overall, Tesla's introduction of the Chinese-made Model Y at a more affordable price point is expected to significantly enhance its market position in Korea. As more consumers opt for clean and sustainable transportation options, it is likely that Tesla's sales and market share will continue to rise in the coming years, paving the way for a greener automotive future in the country.
