Hollywood's actors strike, which began with a walkout by superstars Matt Damon and Emily Blunt from the London premiere of Oppenheimer, has cast a shadow over the industry. However, despite the ongoing strike and the restrictions imposed by the Screen Actors Guild, major film festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival are still forging ahead with their plans.
While actors are barred from promoting their films during the strike, some industry luminaries may attend the festivals in different capacities, such as directors or producers. Notable names like Ethan Hawke, Sean Penn, Dakota Johnson, and Viggo Mortensen are expected to make appearances in Toronto, following the rules of the interim agreements, which permit guild members to work on independent films under certain conditions.
The strikes by both Hollywood writers and actors have presented challenges for studios in promoting their movies. However, film festivals remain a critically important tool for generating buzz and building anticipation for theatrical releases and awards ceremonies. Toronto International Film Festival, for example, has showcased several films that later went on to win the prestigious Academy Award for Best Picture. The festival's management decided against canceling or postponing the event and instead made adjustments to minimize the impact of the strikes.
Of the 261 films in the Toronto lineup, only 15% are covered by contracts with the striking unions. The majority of the films are international productions, with roughly 70% coming from outside North America. The Screen Actors Guild has allowed members involved in independent films to promote their work under specific conditions and terms related to the ongoing contract negotiations with major studios.
One positive outcome of the pandemic has been the opportunity for actors to pursue passion projects, such as directing or creating independent films. Many of these projects will be showcased at film festivals, and the actors-turned-directors are committed to attending while adhering to the guild's guidelines.
While the number of celebrities attending festivals may not be as abundant as in previous years due to the strikes, audiences can still expect to see the presence of accomplished directors and artists. The fans who attend festivals solely to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars may be disappointed, as the strike has impacted the traditional red carpet experience to some extent. Nonetheless, the excitement surrounding the fall film festivals remains strong, and audiences can look forward to discovering new and compelling films from around the world.
