Taylor Swift's highly anticipated concert film, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," is poised to break records and potentially become the biggest US debut of 2023. The film, which documents Swift's ongoing Eras tour, is projected to generate up to $145 million in ticket sales in the US and Canada during its opening weekend, according to Boxoffice Pro. The overwhelming demand for the film even led to its release being moved up a day, indicating that it could surpass expectations. Warner Bros.' "Barbie" currently holds the title for the biggest domestic debut, opening with $155 million in July.

The success of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" not only signifies a milestone for the cinema business still recovering from the pandemic but also highlights shifting dynamics in Hollywood. Swift negotiated directly with theater chain AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., bypassing traditional studios in a distribution deal that was once unfathomable. This underscores the growing influence of female filmgoers, who have played a significant role in the resurgence of theaters this year. Previously, the industry predominantly focused on attracting young male audiences with superhero and sci-fi films.

Sherrese Clarke Soares, founder of HarbourView Equity Partners, remarked at the Bloomberg Screentime conference that this summer has been a celebration of the female economy in both music and content. With the passionate support of her fan base (known as Swifties), Taylor Swift's film is expected to surpass previous concert documentaries. The current box office record in that category is held by Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never," which made $73 million in domestic sales, with $29.5 million earned during its opening weekend in 2011.

Unlike other concert films, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" opted to bypass Hollywood studios, potentially increasing its profitability. By securing distribution directly with AMC, Swift avoided having to pay a distribution fee to studios, which typically amounts to around 10% of ticket sales. Moreover, the deal with AMC allowed her to set minimum pretax ticket prices at $19.89 for adults and $13.13 for children, nodding to important milestones in her career.

AMC's agreement with Swift made it the first chain to sell tickets to the movie, while other theaters gained access through subdistributor Variance Films. Swift and AMC are expected to take 57% of the box office sales, leaving the remaining amount and revenue from concessions for the theaters. The significance of this partnership was evident when AMC broke its single-day ticket sales record within 24 hours of the movie's announcement. In addition to its domestic release, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" will premiere in over 100 countries through various distributors.

Prior to the release of the film, AMC Theaters has been capitalizing on the excitement by offering Eras Tour-themed popcorn buckets, posters, and cups for moviegoers. The theaters are promoting a concert-like experience, encouraging fans to dress up, dance, and exchange friendship bracelets. This is welcomed news for devoted fans like Bella Diecidue, who plans to wear a sparkly dress inspired by Swift's "Reputation" album on opening night. Friendship bracelets have become a symbol of Swiftie fashion, with an increase in sales reported during her tour as fans sought to emulate one of her lyrics.

Taylor Swift's impact on the economy extends beyond her music and film ventures. According to Bloomberg Economics, spending by Swifties and fans of fellow superstar Beyoncé contributed approximately $5.4 billion to the US gross domestic product in the third quarter. The devoted fan base channel their support into attending performances, with the average Swiftie spending around $1,500 on tickets, accommodations, travel, and dining. Beyoncé, who attended the premiere of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," will also have her own concert movie released through AMC in December.

The frenzy surrounding the film has been amplified by the power of social media. Cindy Anonuevo, a mother from Los Angeles, shared that her 11-year-old daughter and her friends have been preparing for the movie by purchasing matching accessories and friendship bracelets to trade with other attendees. The excitement is palpable, and fans are eagerly anticipating the concert-like experience that the film promises to deliver.

As "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" hits theaters, it has the potential to make history as one of the highest-grossing concert films of all time. With Swift's devoted following, the film is expected to exceed expectations and continue the box office success that female icons have brought to the industry this year.
