As the Israeli bombardment escalates in Gaza, the already dire situation is reaching a critical point. Bakeries are running out of bread, drinking water is in short supply, and power outages have left families without charged phones to check on the safety of their fleeing relatives. Eyad Abu Mutlaq, a resident of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, expressed the distressing reality, saying, "There is an electricity crisis, food crisis, water crisis, a crisis of everything. It is only God who can resolve it." The influx of people fleeing to the south after Israel's warning to evacuate the north has further strained already limited resources.

The United Nations has called on Israel to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, a densely populated strip of land home to 2.3 million people. In response to the devastating attack launched by Hamas on October 7th, Israel has imposed a "total blockade," cutting off food supplies and electricity to the region. A week into the blockade, shops are running out of essential items, leaving residents desperate. Um Salem, a Khan Younis resident, lamented, "This is how Israel is fighting us, through starvation of our children. They either kill children by bombs or soon by starvation."

Israel claims that it urged people to evacuate the northern region for their own safety, ensuring they remained out of harm's way. It also promised to guarantee the safety of fleeing Palestinians on two main roads until a specific time. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Many roads and streets have been damaged in previous attacks, making travel difficult or impossible.

The Gaza authorities reported that 70 people were killed and 200 injured when Israeli strikes hit vehicles carrying people fleeing the north. Independent verification of these figures is challenging. On the other side, the death toll from Israel's response has exceeded 2,200 people by Saturday. With no access to the Egyptian border, more and more Gazans are seeking refuge in the south. Israel has been amassing troops and tanks at the border and has already launched raids.

The situation is rapidly deteriorating. Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner-general of the UN refugee agency UNRWA, stressed the urgent need for fuel to provide safe drinking water. He warned that without immediate action, severe dehydration could claim the lives of particularly vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and women. Lazzarini appealed for the lifting of the humanitarian assistance blockade.

U.S. President Joe Biden recognized the urgency of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, pledging to address it as a priority. He stated that he would work with Israel, Egypt, Jordan, other Arab states, and the UN to provide aid. Meanwhile, Gaza's healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, with hospitals struggling to handle the massive influx of injured individuals amidst dwindling medical supplies and fuel shortages.

The devastating Israeli airstrikes have demolished over 1,695 buildings and high-rise towers, as well as 7,000 housing units, according to the Hamas government media office. Power cuts and lack of fuel for generators have left Gazans in darkness, relying on solar panels to charge their phones to connect with their loved ones. However, the majority of the population feels cut off from the outside world, isolated and desperate for relief.

As the conflict rages on, innocent civilians in Gaza continue to suffer the brunt of the violence. Urgent international action is needed to address the immediate humanitarian crisis and work towards a sustainable solution that brings peace and stability to the region.
