Turkish Airlines is currently engaged in talks with Airbus SE for what could potentially become the largest order in the history of the carrier, if the deal is finalized. In a recent meeting held in Istanbul, Turkish Airlines executives discussed the possibility of purchasing 345 additional planes from the renowned aircraft manufacturer, alongside their previously announced order for 10 A350-900 aircraft made in January.
According to the state-run news agency, Anadolu Agency, discussions included the potential purchase of 75 A350-900 planes, 15 A350-1000 planes, 5 A350F cargo planes, and 250 A321 NEO planes. These negotiations also involved talks with Rolls-Royce, the engine manufacturer, regarding maintenance service and spare engine provision for the A350 widebody jets.
Back in May, Turkish Airlines Chairman Ahmet Bolat revealed the airline's plans to order a staggering 600 planes, without specifying the breakdown between Airbus and its rival Boeing Co.
Bolat outlined the company's growth strategy, stating, "In the next 10 years, we aim to grow by 7.4%, a more modest growth compared to the past 20 years, to carry 170 million passengers and reach a giant fleet of 810 aircraft."
At present, Turkish Airlines has not responded to requests for comment on the Anadolu report, which were made outside of normal business hours.
Should this deal be successfully negotiated, it would not only mark a significant milestone in Turkish Airlines' history, but also strengthen its position as a major player in the global aviation industry. The acquisition of such a large fleet would be instrumental in accommodating the projected growth in passenger demand and expanding the airline's reach to a wider global market.
The A350 planes, known for their fuel efficiency and extended range, are highly sought after by airlines due to their ability to offer both cost savings and an enhanced flying experience for passengers. Additionally, the inclusion of A321 NEO planes would cater to Turkish Airlines' need for a more versatile and efficient narrow-body aircraft to support its expanding regional and short-haul routes.
Turkish Airlines' decision to engage in negotiations with Airbus demonstrates its commitment to invest in state-of-the-art aircraft and technology. By doing so, the airline aims to solidify its position as a leading global carrier and provide its passengers with a superior travel experience.
While the talks are still ongoing, the outcome of these negotiations will undoubtedly be eagerly anticipated by the aviation industry as Turkish Airlines works towards realizing its ambitious growth plans and further establishing itself as a key player in the global aviation market.
