Belgium has implemented stricter rules for prescribing Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and other diabetes medications due to shortages caused by high demand from weight loss patients. The country's Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products issued a legally binding directive stating that these drugs can only be prescribed to patients with type 2 diabetes and individuals with specific types of obesity. The directive also covers Novo's Rybelsus and Victoza, as well as Eli Lilly's Trulicity and AstraZeneca's Bydureon.

The decision comes as Belgium faces limited availability of Ozempic, primarily due to a significant surge in demand. To manage the situation, the agency has imposed restrictions on the use of these medications, including Ozempic, which are expected to remain in place until June 2024.

In addition to diabetes patients, the drugs will now also be accessible to individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher. Patients with a BMI of 30 or higher, suffering from weight-related co-morbidities, will also be eligible, but only if prescribed by an endocrinology specialist.

Ozempic and similar drugs have gained popularity among those seeking weight loss as they help suppress food cravings. However, the rising demand for these medications is surpassing production capacities, leading to potential shortages for diabetes patients who rely on them.

Novo Nordisk encourages the appropriate use of their products for approved conditions, with Ozempic specifically intended for type 2 diabetes treatment. The company recognizes the need to address the growing demand from weight loss patients but emphasizes the importance of prioritizing their medications for individuals with the approved medical indications.
