In a move that spells trouble for X, Threads on Thursday officially launched in the European Union, adding another blow to its rival platform. Meta, headed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, introduced Threads in July as a sister platform to both Facebook and Instagram, directly competing with X in the realm of short-form text communications.
The highly-anticipated launch of Threads EU was teased earlier this week with an untitled countdown timer for European residents visiting the website. Mark Zuckerberg's Meta had initially delayed its European release to ensure compliance with the region's unique regulatory requirements.
Despite having a relatively small user base in Europe, Threads has already amassed around 100 million monthly active users as of October. This impressive growth can be attributed, at least in part, to users of X seeking alternative platforms due to frustrations with Elon Musk's controversial decision-making and erratic behavior.
Unlike its rival, Threads promotes itself as a friendlier and less divisive environment, and it has largely lived up to this promise. However, some users have expressed the need for easier discovery of news and communities aligned with their interests.
This expansion of Threads to the EU poses an additional challenge for X, which is already grappling with an advertiser exodus resulting from concerns over hate speech and Elon Musk's endorsement of fringe ideologies.
In a post on the platform on Thursday as the EU rollout commenced, Zuckerberg welcomed everyone, saying, "Today we're opening Threads to more countries in Europe." His previous statement about aiming to reach over 1 billion worldwide users in the future demonstrates the ambition behind the platform's growth strategy.
Threads burst onto the scene in July, just as X was facing turbulence, and quickly attracted millions of user signups, casting doubts on the future of its rival. However, engagement levels dropped off rapidly as users voiced dissatisfaction with its limited features.
Nonetheless, today's launch serves as a reminder of Meta's determined efforts in building and expanding the Threads app, steadily increasing its daily user base. Since its initial release, the platform has introduced several new features, including a desktop version, a following feed, and topic tags for easier content discovery.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram and overseeing Threads, revealed that the company plans to extend fact-checking capabilities on the platform in the new year, further emphasizing Meta's commitment to fostering a responsible and informed community.
As Threads makes its debut in the European Union, it inches closer to Zuckerberg's goal of surpassing 1 billion users worldwide, marking a significant milestone for the platform. In the face of growing challenges, Meta remains steadfast in its pursuit of providing users with an engaging and inclusive social media experience.
