Nigeria is taking steps to reclaim two banks that were allegedly purchased at a significant discount by former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele. A report by a special investigator appointed by President Bola Tinubu states that the investigation into the acquisition has been completed and the two banks will soon be returned to the federal government.

Emefiele's suspension came shortly after Tinubu assumed office in late May, and he was subsequently arrested and detained on charges including fraud. In response, President Tinubu ordered an inquiry into the operations of the Central Bank and authorized collaboration with security and anti-corruption agencies to investigate the matter further.

The report by Jim Obazee, which has been submitted to the President, alleges that Emefiele acquired Union Bank of Nigeria and Keystone Bank using "ill-gotten wealth" without providing evidence of payment. The investigation suggests that the former central banker used various proxies to make these acquisitions with the assistance and connivance of Emefiele and the Central Bank.

According to the report, an initial review of the cases revealed that Keystone Bank was acquired for free. It is alleged that certain individuals were used as proxies in collaboration with Emefiele and the Central Bank to obtain ownership of the two banks.

Emefiele has vehemently denied any wrongdoing in relation to these acquisitions. While his lawyers have refrained from commenting on the investigation's findings, a government spokesperson is yet to respond to inquiries seeking their input on the matter.

The move by Nigeria to reclaim the banks is a significant step towards transparency and accountability within the financial sector. If the allegations are proven to be true, it would further highlight the need for stronger regulations and oversight to prevent such instances of fraud and corruption. As the situation unfolds, Nigerians will be keen to see the outcome of the investigation and how the government plans to address the issue.
