Severe flooding has resulted in the cancellation of all Eurostar train services between the UK and mainland Europe. The operator announced the closure due to waterlogged railway tunnels near the Ebbsfleet International station in Kent, southern England. Travelers looking forward to celebrating the New Year in popular destinations like Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam were left disappointed by the unexpected news.
The cancellation of services has left many travelers stranded and upset. Alina, a 23-year-old who was planning to travel from London to Amsterdam, expressed her devastation at the situation, saying, "I just want to get home. It's New Year's Eve tomorrow." Another traveler, Sander Blom from Amsterdam, described the situation as chaotic. Despite the setback, Blom decided to make the most of the situation and enjoy a few extra days in London, even though it would cost him extra money.
Not only Eurostar, but UK train operator Southwestern Railways also had to cancel its high-speed services to and from London's St Pancras International station. This is the second time Eurostar services have been disrupted during the Christmas season, as a previous strike in December had caused significant problems for travelers.
The cancellations come as the UK braces itself for severe weather, including heavy snow and rain. The country's Meteorological Office issued yellow weather warnings for many parts of the country for Saturday. Southern England is expected to experience strong winds, which may cause travel disruptions and power outages. Coastal areas will likely witness gusts of 45-50 mph, while Wales is predicted to receive 20-30mm of rain during the period of heavy rain and strong winds.
In Scotland, a yellow warning has been issued for rain and snow, with potential disruptions expected. Meteorologists have forecasted a period of sleet and snow, which will eventually turn into rain. While the severe weather conditions are causing inconveniences for travelers, authorities are working diligently to ensure people's safety and minimize any potential risks.
