Despite ingredient disclosure tensions in China, L'Oreal remains confident in the potential of the Chinese market. The CEO of L'Oreal, Nicolas Hieronimus, stated that China will continue to be a significant source of growth for the company due to the increasing middle class. L'Oreal plans to continue investing in the Chinese market while respecting Chinese regulations without compromising its recipe secrets.

Last year, the European Union raised concerns with China regarding the extensive product information requirements imposed on beauty companies like L'Oreal and LVMH. China is gradually implementing rules that demand cosmetics companies to provide detailed data on ingredients, manufacturing processes, raw material sourcing, and formula composition. Most of this information is stored in a database managed by Chinese authorities.

European companies fear that they may be forced to disclose trade secrets under the guise of product safety. However, there is no evidence to suggest that China is misusing the collected information. France and China have agreed to collaborate in enhancing the regulatory environment surrounding cosmetics to ensure market access and product safety.

In addition, Hieronimus mentioned that sales trends in travel retail, particularly in Asia, are expected to improve gradually throughout 2024. Last year proved to be a challenging environment for travel retail, but L'Oreal anticipates a significant boost in the second half of 2024. L'Oreal's annual results will be reported on February 8th.
