Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant milestone in strengthening ties between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). As the official religion of the UAE is Islam, the construction of a Hindu temple holds immense cultural and symbolic importance. With a 27-acre plot, the pink sandstone temple, known as the BAPS Hindu Mandir, is also one of the largest in the Middle East. The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of Indian officials, Bollywood stars, and even members of the prominent Ambani family, along with senior Abu Dhabi officials.
This event follows another recent temple inauguration by PM Modi in India, where he consecrated a controversial temple built at the site of a demolished mosque. These initiatives are largely seen as significant steps towards the Bharatiya Janata Party's goal of elevating Hinduism in the Indian public sphere and maintaining its popularity among predominantly Hindu voters in the upcoming elections.
However, Modi's visit to the UAE served a broader purpose beyond religious diplomacy. The trip aimed to deepen commercial and diplomatic ties between India and the Gulf nation. During the visit, the two countries signed a bilateral investment treaty and pledged cooperation on a major trade corridor that connects the Middle East and Europe. In addition, agreements were made to collaborate on digital infrastructure and other areas of mutual interest.
The UAE is home to approximately 3.6 million Indian workers, constituting the largest overseas Indian community in the world. This temple inauguration serves as a testament to the strong cultural and economic bonds between both nations, and the importance of nurturing these ties further.
PM Modi's visit to the UAE also allows him to position himself as a global leader ahead of the impending elections in India, which are expected to take place in April. With the Bharatiya Janata Party in a strong position and facing a weakened opposition alliance, Modi seeks to leverage his popularity among his Hindu voter base and project himself as a statesman on the global stage.
In his address to over 40,000 Indians gathered in a stadium in Abu Dhabi, Modi praised the UAE and its leadership for their support and cooperation. This gesture not only strengthens the bilateral relationship but also sends a message of gratitude and friendship, fostering goodwill between the two nations.
As Modi's trip to the UAE comes to a close, he is scheduled to visit Qatar, further solidifying India's relationships in the region. With successful economic collaborations and cultural exchanges, both India and the UAE are poised to benefit from enhanced cooperation and mutual understanding. The inauguration of the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi stands as a symbol of religious harmony and opens a new chapter in India-UAE relations.
