In response to concerns raised by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), General Motors Co. is facing scrutiny over potential engine failures in over 870,000 of its full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. The NHTSA has initiated a preliminary evaluation into V8 engines found in Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, as well as the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade SUVs from model years 2019 through 2024.

The main issue at hand is the risk of engine failure, which could lead to a loss of power in the vehicle, thereby increasing the likelihood of a potential crash. Although there have been 39 reported incidents of engine failure, fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.

According to complaints received by the NHTSA, the engine failures seem to stem from a bearing failure, which can ultimately result in the engine seizing or a connecting rod breaching the engine block. What is particularly concerning is that there are no warning signs or indicators prior to the engine failing, making it a potentially dangerous situation for drivers.

General Motors has assured that they are fully cooperating with NHTSA's examination into the matter. As the investigation progresses, more information will likely surface regarding the extent of the issue and any potential recalls or corrective measures that may need to be taken to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers in these affected vehicles.
