Tesla Inc. is strategically revamping its sales approach to combat a sluggish start to the year, enticing customers with attractive offers on its electric vehicles. In a bid to stimulate sales, the company is rolling out appealing incentives such as free lifetime supercharging for Foundation Series Cybertrucks purchased post-Feb. 28. Moreover, Tesla is luring customers with enticing financing options, including 0% APR or zero due at signing for Model 3s, and discounts on older Model Y units as production of a refreshed version gains momentum.

The ongoing first-quarter lull, a typical occurrence for Tesla, has been particularly pronounced this year. Notably, the firm has witnessed a dip in vehicle sales and shipments year-over-year in crucial markets. Preliminary data from China's Passenger Car Association revealed a substantial 49% decrease in Tesla shipments in China last month - the company's largest market. Similarly, registrations in France saw a 26% decline in February following a sluggish January, while overall European sales plummeted by 45% year-over-year in January. Furthermore, in California, Tesla's prime market in the US, Model 3 registrations plummeted by 36% in 2024.

The market response to Tesla's performance has been reflected in the stock market, with Tesla shares declining by 4.7% at 1:20 p.m. in New York on Tuesday amidst broader market downturns triggered by apprehensions of a global trade war. Notably, the company's stock has slumped by 30% this year up to Monday's closing.

Despite these challenges, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk remains optimistic about the company's growth prospects for the year ahead. Following the first annual sales decline in over a decade in 2024, Tesla's management is confident about a resurgence in 2025. Last year, the company unleashed a flurry of year-end promotions to bolster its 2024 numbers. While Tesla's 2025 projections do not provide specific figures, a prediction made by Musk in October hinting at a potential 20% to 30% sales growth was not reiterated.

Moreover, Tesla is currently grappling with an aging EV lineup as it readies for the anticipated commencement of production of more budget-friendly models in the first half of this year. However, concrete details about these forthcoming vehicles remain scarce. The company is expected to face production setbacks this quarter as it gears up for factory upgrades aimed at manufacturing the revamped Model Y, its top-selling vehicle.

In conjunction with the enticing supercharging and financing incentives, Tesla is also showcasing the federal EV tax credit on several of its models, including non-Foundation Series Cybertruck variants. Despite threats posed to this incentive by the Trump Administration, Tesla is actively promoting it. Additionally, Tesla's plans to phase out the Foundation Series of the Cybertruck, which initiated deliveries in late 2023, were disclosed in June, with the discontinuation slated for the near future.
