Italian insurance company Unipol Gruppo SpA has recently acquired Starlink terminals from Elon Musk's SpaceX to assist with rescue and relief efforts in areas of Italy affected by severe flooding. Last week, more than a dozen people lost their lives and around 10,000 others were displaced in the northern Emilia-Romagna region due to heavy rainfall.
As rescue workers continue to reach out to dozens of villages and farms isolated by the floods, some 20,000 people have lost access to power. Unipol says the terminals, which provide web services beamed down from satellites, will help rescue workers and essential service providers, as well as flood victims, to access the internet. In addition, SpaceX will align some of its satellites to focus on the affected areas.
The move has been welcomed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who is cutting short her attendance at the Group of Seven summit in Japan to assist in the response effort, according to sources.
Unipol's decision to purchase Starlink terminals from SpaceX is part of a wider trend of integrating space-based technologies to support disaster relief efforts worldwide. Satellite communications are increasingly used to provide critical support services in times of crisis, including remote monitoring, mapping, and communication.
The use of satellite-based technologies will enable rescue workers to reach and assist those affected by natural disasters quickly and efficiently, providing them with the necessary support and resources to recover from the impact of the floods. Overall, the deployment of Starlink terminals in Italy is expected to make a significant difference in the ongoing relief efforts.
