Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet Inc, the parent company of Google, is facing difficulties in finding Google's place in the AI boom. Google had laid the groundwork for OpenAI's ChatGPT, but Microsoft took advantage of it. However, Google has now raced forward with its own AI tools, including the chatbot 'Bard', while being careful not to anger its users, regulators or advertisers. In a recent interview, Pichai discussed Google's approach to the current AI moment and its plans.

Pichai recognizes this as a seminal moment in the industry, with innovation reaching consumers, enterprises, and even entire countries. However, he admits that there is a trade-off with generative AI products - exciting new use cases arise, but the system may make mistakes as it is inherently generative. Nevertheless, Pichai believes that Google will not change its general approach over time, although it may take into account proprietary information when getting products into the market.

Pichai also recognizes that the industry is competitive, and some Googlers leave the company to create startups. He views this as healthy, as some of the startups become loyal customers, and some even return to Google.

Google's Bard chatbot is still new and has room for improvement. Pichai acknowledges that Google is behind in certain areas but is doing better than competitors in others. He also emphasizes that AI is no longer a matter of race, and he feels more confident in Google's position now than in the shift to mobile.

In regards to Apple's Vision Pro headset, Pichai mentions that he has neither used nor seen it. However, Google has always believed that computing will evolve beyond black rectangles, and he is excited about the potential for more immersive experiences.

Pichai believes that AI regulation is necessary, but it should be proportionate based on the use cases and associated risks. Google has taken a cautious approach and has set up structures for responsible AI.

Finally, Pichai recognizes the need to focus on risks associated with AI, such as issues with deepfakes. Cost-cutting efforts are still ongoing at Google, and Pichai believes that the company must always be striving for efficiency. In response to Microsoft's claim that Google was "dancing," Pichai says it is just part of the game.

In summary, Pichai reaffirms Google's commitment to cautious AI development and responsible implementation while still striving for efficiency and competitiveness in the industry.
