Just ten days after the formation of Finland's new government, the country's Economy Minister, Vilhelm Junnila, has resigned amidst mounting pressure over his association with far-right movements and extremist remarks. Junnila announced his decision to step down from Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's government on Friday, stating that it was impossible for him to continue as a minister in a satisfactory way, considering the reputation of Finland.

The controversy surrounding Junnila began earlier in the week when the opposition filed a motion of no confidence in him, arguing that his ties to far-right groups were not isolated incidents, but rather a pattern of frequent and systematic contact. Despite the motion, Junnila managed to win a confidence vote.

One of the focal points of the criticism against Junnila stemmed from a speech he gave at a rally organized by the Nationalist Alliance in Turku four years ago, which was dedicated to the victims of a stabbing attack in the city. The event drew members from the now disbanded Nordic Resistance Movement, an extremist group that Junnila acknowledged his association with in a recent apology on Facebook.

Additionally, Junnila had made comments in the past regarding his election number, 88, which is widely recognized as a white supremacist numerical code. He congratulated a candidate who was assigned the same number, referring to it as a "winning card." Junnila later downplayed the significance of the number, but faced backlash for the association.

In response to the mounting criticism, Junnila publicly admitted his faults and expressed regret for his past actions. He acknowledged that his conduct had been inappropriate and expressed his condemnation of anti-Semitism. However, these apologies were not sufficient to quell the concerns surrounding his far-right associations, leading to his decision to resign.

In a final Facebook post, Junnila emphasized that he has never had any relationship or connection with extremists, and reiterated his condemnation of all forms of anti-Semitism. It remains to be seen how Finland's new government will handle this setback and move forward in filling the vacant position left by Junnila's resignation.
