Stellantis NV, the multinational automotive corporation, is on the verge of finalizing a deal to acquire a 20% stake in Zhejiang Leapmotor Technologies Ltd., a prominent Chinese electric vehicle (EV) company. Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that the transaction is in its final stages, with an official announcement expected in the coming days. If successful, this move would solidify Stellantis' presence in the world's largest auto market. Leapmotor, based in Hangzhou, currently holds a market value of $5.4 billion, with its shares having risen approximately 22% in Hong Kong this year.

As part of the deal, Leapmotor and Stellantis are also reportedly discussing the establishment of a joint venture. This collaboration would grant Stellantis the opportunity to manufacture and sell some Leapmotor vehicles outside of China. Additionally, the partnership would provide Stellantis access to Leapmotor's advanced technologies and parts, bolstering its EV capabilities. The potential benefits for both parties appear significant, as they seek to capitalize on the growing popularity of EVs in China.

Stellantis, which counts brands such as Chrysler, Fiat, Jeep, and Peugeot among its portfolio, has long been eyeing the Chinese EV market as a strategic growth avenue. However, the company has encountered challenges expanding its footprint in China, particularly in comparison to rivals like Volkswagen AG and BMW AG. To address this, Stellantis has been actively exploring investment opportunities in Chinese EV companies, demonstrating its commitment to establishing a stronger presence in the country.

While the discussions between Stellantis and Leapmotor are said to be in advanced stages, there is still a possibility for delays or a breakdown of the deal, caution insiders familiar with the matter. A representative from Leapmotor has not provided immediate comment regarding these developments.

In recent months, global automakers have been actively looking to tap into the Chinese EV market, recognizing it as a critical market for expansion. In July, Volkswagen AG revealed its plans to invest $700 million in Xpeng Inc. and collaborate on developing EVs specifically for the Chinese market. This heightened interest highlights the significance of the Chinese EV sector in the automotive industry's future growth trajectory.

The Chinese EV market itself is becoming increasingly competitive, with players like Tesla Inc. releasing new models and other manufacturers aggressively lowering prices to combat slowing growth. Leapmotor, having generated $803 million in a successful Hong Kong initial public offering in 2022, is currently trading around 23% below its debut price, illustrating the intensity of the price war in the Chinese EV space.

Last week, Stellantis announced its intention to sell automotive assets to its Chinese partner, Dongfeng Motor Group Co., after halting production of its Jeep brand in China last year. This move aligns with Stellantis' broader strategy of streamlining its operations and focusing on high-potential growth areas. The potential collaboration with Leapmotor can be seen as another step in this direction, leveraging the strengths of both companies to capture the vast opportunities presented by the Chinese EV market.
