Indian authorities have launched an investigation into a potential human trafficking operation after a chartered flight carrying 303 Indians was grounded in France last week. The flight, which originated from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was en route to Nicaragua before being stopped at a refueling stopover in Vatry airport in northeastern France based on information provided by an anonymous informant. Among the passengers were 11 unaccompanied minors. On Tuesday, 276 of the passengers returned to India, many of whom were from the state of Gujarat.

The investigation is underway in Gujarat, with officials aiming to determine how these individuals ended up on the flight. Authorities have already obtained the names and addresses of 21 people from Gujarat who were on board and are now trying to identify those who facilitated their travel. The home ministry in India has also identified the registration of the chartered flight and the individuals involved in operating this trafficking network.

The chartered flight in question was operated by Romania's Legend Airlines. The lawyer representing the airline, Liliana Bakayoko, has chosen not to disclose the identity of the client who chartered the plane, citing contractual confidentiality.

Two passengers on the flight have been placed under "assisted witness" status by French authorities, who are investigating them for suspected people smuggling. Additionally, 25 others have remained in France to seek asylum. The term "assisted witness" is used in France to denote an intermediate status between that of a witness and an indicted suspect.

There is an ongoing focus on whether any children had left India unaccompanied and how they may have traveled to the UAE. Immigration officials in India are being questioned regarding this matter. The individuals on the flight had legal tourist visas to enter Dubai and had arrived in the UAE at different times before congregating to leave on the same plane.

This incident comes at a time when the number of Indians attempting to enter the United States illegally has significantly increased. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data, the number of Indians apprehended between October 2022 and September 2023 tripled compared to the previous three years. In response, the U.S. State Department recently announced visa restrictions targeting individuals involved in chartering flights to Nicaragua for migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.

As the investigation progresses, authorities in India remain committed to uncovering the extent of the human trafficking operation and holding those involved accountable. Efforts are also being made to ensure the safety and well-being of the returned passengers, with support offered to those seeking asylum in France.
