Winter storms and freezing temperatures continue to grip the United States, with no signs of letting up this weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). As a result of the extreme weather, there have been at least 83 confirmed weather-related deaths reported by CBS News over the past week. Tennessee and Oregon have been particularly hard hit, with 19 and 16 fatalities respectively, including three individuals who tragically died from apparent electrocution when a power line fell onto their vehicle.
These fatalities are in addition to those reported in other states, including Illinois, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Washington, Kentucky, New York, and New Jersey. The severe winter weather has caused havoc across the country, with heavy snowfall, freezing rain, and heavy showers tormenting much of the South and Pacific Northwest. The extreme conditions have led to record-high natural gas consumption for heating and power generation in homes and businesses.
As the weekend progresses, the Gulf Region is bracing itself for further freezing temperatures with hard-freeze warnings issued across eastern Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, parts of Florida, and Georgia. In Mississippi, wind-chill factors as low as zero degrees Fahrenheit are forecast for Saturday night. The NWS has also warned that a new cold air mass building up over the central part of the country will send temperatures plummeting 20 to 30 degrees below average from the High Plains to the Ohio and Tennessee valleys by Monday evening.
Snow is expected downwind of the Great Lakes and over parts of the central Appalachians and the Northeast until Sunday evening. Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest is likely to experience another round of freezing rain and showers, prompting winter weather advisories. Additionally, the Sierra Nevada mountains can expect snowfall, while the lower elevations of northern California may face heavy rains and potential flash flooding. Southern California might also experience downpours on Monday, adding to the already treacherous weather conditions.
With no immediate reprieve in sight, it is crucial for residents in affected regions to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to stay safe amidst the freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and other severe weather conditions.
