Volvo Car AB has initiated the relocation of manufacturing for Chinese-made electric vehicles to Belgium as the European Union gears up to enforce tariffs on these vehicles, The Times revealed. Reports suggest that production of Volvo’s EX30 and EX90 models will be transferred to Belgium, with the possibility of some Volvo models intended for the UK also being assembled there. This strategic move comes as a response to the escalating trade tensions between the EU and China, resulting in a series of anti-dumping investigations due to allegations of unfair subsidies.

As one of the western automakers most at risk from the potential tariffs, Volvo, under the ownership of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., is navigating the shifting landscape of international trade policies. The EU is on the verge of informing EV manufacturers in China about the anticipated imposition of provisional tariffs beginning July 4, which would surpass the existing 10% import duties. In response to the EU’s actions, China has criticized the bloc for attempting to stifle Chinese companies and has vowed to take necessary measures to protect its own interests.

The refutations of unfair competition levied against China have been vehemently denied, as per the Xinhua News Agency's recent report, citing statements from Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. Wang expressed hope for the EU to veer away from trade protectionism and revert to a stance centered on dialogue and collaboration, as highlighted by Xinhua. Meanwhile, in a separate context, Chinese dairy enterprises are reportedly gearing up to request an anti-dumping investigation against EU imports, as detailed by the Global Times without providing specific information.

With the global trade landscape rife with friction and uncertainties, Volvo’s strategic decision underscores the complexities and challenges faced by international businesses in navigating trade policies and safeguarding their interests in an evolving economic environment.
