In response to mounting safety concerns and public backlash against reckless driving and chaotic parking, the mayor's office in Madrid has announced a deadline for operators of rental e-scooters to remove all mobility devices from the city's streets by October 25th.

Last month, the city revoked the licenses of three foreign operators - Lime, Dott, and Tier Mobility - citing their failure to enforce regulations on user circulation and parking. Each of these companies has approximately 2,000 e-scooters deployed in Madrid, with Lime accessible through the Uber app.

While Lime and Dott stated that they have yet to receive official notification of the deadline from city hall, both companies expressed willingness to take necessary actions upon formal notification. Dott indicated it would consider legal and operational steps following the receipt of the official document. On the other hand, Tier Mobility did not provide an immediate response to requests for comment.

The controversy surrounding e-scooter sharing systems extends beyond Madrid, with cities worldwide facing similar issues of unsafe driving practices on roads and sidewalks, as well as unsystematic parking that disrupts public spaces. As the deadline looms, operators will need to swiftly address these concerns to regain the city's trust and potentially resume their services in the future.
