In a strategic move reflecting shifting market dynamics, Stellantis NV has announced a delay in the launch of its first all-electric truck to 2026. The decision comes as the company prioritizes the production of an extended-range pickup known as the Ram 1500 Ramcharger in response to decreased demand for electric vehicles and looming changes in government policies.

Initially scheduled for the first half of 2025, the launch of the all-electric truck, the Ram 1500 REV, was already postponed once due to challenges in managing multiple new electric vehicle introductions. The company is now reorienting its powertrain strategy following the departure of former CEO Carlos Tavares, who had emphasized boosting EV sales to avoid fines for emissions non-compliance.

The Ramcharger, set to be available for orders in the first half of 2025 and delivery in the second half, is an extended-range pickup featuring a plug-in capability along with an onboard gas generator to enhance range and towing capacity. With a projected range of up to 690 miles and 663 horsepower, the Ramcharger aims to cater to consumer preferences while providing a competitive edge in technology.

Stellantis cites overwhelming consumer interest and the need to remain at the forefront of technological advancements as key factors driving the decision to prioritize the Ramcharger over the all-electric Ram 1500 REV. The company's move also reflects the slowing industry demand for battery electric vehicles, as evidenced by Ford Motor Co.'s recent decision to halt production of its F-150 Lightning plug-in pickup due to dwindling EV demand.

As Stellantis navigates a challenging market landscape, notably with a decline in sales for its profitable Ram brand and the need to clear aging inventory, the production of the Ramcharger at the Sterling Heights, Michigan plant signifies a pivotal shift in the company's manufacturing and product strategy. With industry dynamics in flux, Stellantis is adapting to emerging trends and consumer preferences to maintain its competitive position in the evolving automotive landscape.
