Papua New Guinea's Foreign Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, has resigned from his position following a controversy over the cost and size of the country's delegation attending the coronation of King Charles III in London. Tkatchenko made the announcement in a statement, clarifying that he had consulted with Prime Minister James Marape, who would take over the portfolio. However, Tkatchenko will remain a member of parliament.

The controversy arose due to the cost of the delegation's travel, which many people in Papua New Guinea felt was exorbitant. The 30-person delegation received a 50,000 kina ($14,000) allowance each to cover their hotels and airfares. Many people felt that the money could have been better spent on healthcare and other essential services.

The situation was further complicated when Tkatchenko's daughter, Savannah Tkatchenko, posted a TikTok video discussing luxury shopping before boarding a flight in Singapore. This turned her into a focal point for anger and criticism, with many people calling for her father's resignation.

In response, Tkatchenko apologized for calling people criticizing his daughter "primitive animals" in an interview with the Australian state broadcaster. Prime Minister Marape also apologized to Tkatchenko's family, especially his daughter, for the "traumatic experience over the last couple of days."

Despite the controversy, Papua New Guinea is preparing to host several important world leaders, including US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the coming weeks. The country is being courted by both the United States and China, as both countries seek to expand their influence in the Pacific islands region.

In summary, Tkatchenko's resignation comes amid a controversy over the cost of Papua New Guinea's delegation to the coronation of King Charles III in London. The situation has highlighted concerns about government spending priorities in Papua New Guinea, and has led to calls for greater transparency and accountability.
