California, known for its high cost of living, is home to five out of the top ten most expensive metros to raise children. San Francisco tops the list, with an annual cost of $35,647, nearly double the national average. San Jose comes in a close second, with an annual cost of over $33,000.

In contrast, the top ten most affordable metro areas to raise children are all located in the southern United States. The region has seen an influx of people escaping more expensive states, such as New York and California, during the pandemic. Morristown, Tennessee ranks as the most affordable place to raise children, with an annual cost of $14,577.

The study also found that child care is one of the biggest expenses families face, accounting for nearly half of the annual cost of raising a child. Childcare costs an average of $9,051 per year. The study took into consideration the costs of food, housing, healthcare, and other necessities required when adding a child to a two-adult household, which SmartAsset calls the "marginal additional cost" of having a kid.

Interestingly, the study found that childcare in areas such as Detroit and Trenton, New Jersey, costs about $3,500 more per year than in the New York City metropolitan area - a roughly 25% premium. While these areas may have cost advantages compared to the NYC metro area, when it comes to childcare, the expenses can be higher.

"As the cost of childcare continues to rise, families are finding it increasingly difficult to afford to live comfortably and are looking for ways to cut costs," stated Jaclyn DeJohn, SmartAsset's managing editor of economic analysis.

Overall, the study highlights the significant differences in the cost of raising children across different regions of the US. In high-cost areas like San Francisco, families must come up with creative ways to manage expenses, while lower-cost areas in the southern US may be more attractive for families on a budget.
