Sweden has raised its terrorist threat level to "high" following a series of Quran burnings that have ignited anger in the Muslim world. The decision to increase the threat level from three to four on a five-point scale was announced by Charlotte von Essen, the head of Sweden's Security Service. This escalation signifies a significant and immediate risk compared to the previous "elevated" level.

Von Essen stated in a press conference that Sweden has transitioned from being viewed as a legitimate target to a top priority target for Islamist extremists throughout this year. She also warned that this elevated threat level is expected to persist for a considerable period of time. The Swedish government has criticized the desecration of the Islamic holy book, which has resulted in widespread protests and riots.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson revealed that there have been thwarted plans to carry out attacks in Sweden. He highlighted that several terrorist groups have called upon sympathizers to seek revenge for the Quran burnings in the country. Kristersson further suggested that the recent attempted murder at the Swedish Honorary Consulate in Izmir might have had a political motive and was specifically targeted against Sweden.

In response to the escalating threat, authorities in Sweden are considering amending laws on public order that would empower the police to intervene in situations that may endanger national security. Past attempts to prevent Quran burnings have been unsuccessful due to Sweden's strong protections for freedom of speech and assembly.

Although Sweden has been under an elevated threat of terror attacks since 2010, the most recent act of violence occurred in 2017 when an Uzbek man hijacked a truck and plowed through a crowded shopping street in Stockholm, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. Swedish authorities have repeatedly sounded the alarm about disinformation campaigns that aim to portray the country as hostile towards Islam.

Von Essen also mentioned that intelligence agencies have indications that foreign states have exploited the focus on Sweden to further their own negative narratives. However, no specific countries were named in relation to these allegations. The decision to raise the threat level is not connected to any specific event but rather serves as a signal to Swedish society about the seriousness of the risks they face.

In light of this development, the UK government recently advised travelers to Sweden to maintain a high level of vigilance, as terrorist attacks are deemed "very likely" to be attempted. It is crucial for authorities to intensify their efforts in preventing future terror attacks and address the underlying issues that contribute to this heightened threat level.
