In a heart-stopping battle for survival, Paris Saint-Germain narrowly avoided elimination from the Champions League group stage after being held to a tense 1-1 draw by Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday. The result would have seen the French champions dumped out of the competition had Newcastle United managed to secure victory over AC Milan in the other Group F match. Fortunately for PSG, Lady Luck was on their side as Newcastle squandered a 1-0 lead, allowing the Italian outfit to score a late winner and secure a 2-1 victory on a rollercoaster night.

With this narrow escape, PSG managed to secure their place in the next round of the tournament as the group runner-up, joining Dortmund who emerged as the group winner. Disappointment accompanied AC Milan as they dropped down into the Europa League after finishing in third place. Newcastle's European campaign also came to a disappointing end as their hopes were crushed.

The match between PSG and Dortmund was a nerve-wracking affair, holding the potential to turn the tides for both teams. Newcastle had taken a first-half lead against AC Milan through Joelinton's ferocious effort, putting immense pressure on PSG to secure a win and advance to the knockout stage.

Despite dominating the early stages, PSG struggled to find the back of the net, with chances from star player Kylian Mbappé and others denied by either wastefulness or brilliant defending. Mbappé's goal-bound effort in the 17th minute was spectacularly cleared by Dortmund's Niklas Süle, leaving PSG frustrated. Bradley Barcola came close to breaking the deadlock as well, hitting the post, while Randal Kolo Muani missed two glorious chances when through on goal.

Dortmund also had their fair share of opportunities in a frantic first half, but the score remained goalless at halftime. The stalemate broke shortly after the restart, with Dortmund capitalizing on PSG's defensive mistake near their own goal. Karim Adeyemi seized the opportunity and calmly guided the ball into the net in the 51st minute, pushing PSG dangerously close to the brink of Champions League elimination.

However, PSG swiftly responded and found the equalizer just five minutes later, thanks to the young and talented 17-year-old Warren Zaïre-Emery, who smashed the ball past Dortmund's goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel. This goal breathed new life into PSG's hopes as it coincided with AC Milan's Christian Pulisic scoring an equalizer against Newcastle, thus putting the French champions back into the driver's seat.

The tension heightened in the final stages of both matches, with Mbappé having a goal disallowed for offside and AC Milan staging a remarkable comeback as substitute Samuel Chukwueze netted a winner in the 84th minute.

Ultimately, it was PSG who emerged triumphant, snatching the final qualification spot despite a less than convincing group stage campaign. The team will now shift its focus to the next round, knowing that challenging opponents lie ahead in their quest for a maiden Champions League title.

Reflecting on their narrow escape, PSG defender Marquinhos emphasized the importance of qualifying, regardless of the circumstances, "From now until the next round, we are going to have to prepare well and prepare better because big opponents will be on the way," he said.

As PSG and Dortmund wait anxiously, they will discover their next formidable opponents when the round-of-16 draw takes place on December 18. The football world eagerly anticipates the exciting battles that await in the knockout stages of Europe's most prestigious club competition.
