Maldives, a popular destination for tourists, is experiencing a potential boycott after three of its officials made derogatory comments about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This has led to calls from Indian citizens and celebrities to boycott the picturesque archipelago in favor of domestic beaches.
The controversy began when Prime Minister Modi shared images of himself snorkeling and walking along a beach in Lakshadweep, a group of islands in the Laccadive Sea off the coast of Kerala. Although Modi didn't mention Maldives in his post, his admiration for the untouched beauty of Lakshadweep may have inadvertently overshadowed Maldives as a vacation destination.
In response, three Maldives officials referred to Modi as a "clown," "terrorist," and a "puppet of Israel." The Maldives government took swift action and suspended the officials, emphasizing that their views were personal and didn't reflect the government's stance.
This incident comes at a delicate time as Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu embarks on a visit to China, his first as President. Muizzu aims to strengthen ties with China, shifting away from his predecessor's inclination towards an "India first" policy. However, it is essential for Maldives not to estrange its closest neighbor, India.
Maldives heavily relies on tourism, with India being a significant contributor. Last year, Indian tourists constituted the largest portion of visitors to the tropical paradise, accounting for 11% of the tourism market. The officials' offensive remarks have sparked anger among Indian tourists, leading to the cancellation of trips to Maldives and the trending hashtag #BoycottMaldives on social media.
Prominent figures, including Bollywood actors and cricket players, have joined the movement and advocated for travelers to opt for local destinations like Lakshadweep. Bollywood star Akshay Kumar labeled the officials' comments as "hateful and racist" and encouraged supporting Indian tourism by exploring local islands.
In solidarity with the public sentiment, Indian travel site EaseMyTrip has temporarily suspended bookings for flights to Maldives. The Confederation of All India Traders, a major trade body, has also called on its members to cease business with Maldives until an apology or remedial measures are provided.
Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer denounced the officials' remarks as "unacceptable" and emphasized the archipelago's commitment to maintaining positive and constructive dialogue with its partners. The Indian High Commission in Maldives has also expressed concerns to the Maldivian Foreign Office.
While this incident poses challenges, it highlights the value Maldives places on its relationship with India. Michael Kugelman from the Wilson Center in Washington suggests that the Maldivian government aims to balance its ties with both India and China, and losing India's support is not a risk they want to take.
The uproar over the officials' comments underscores the importance of responsible and respectful international relations, especially in the tourism sector. It serves as a reminder that diplomatic ties should be nurtured and negativity should be avoided to ensure the continued success and prosperity of destinations around the world.
