In a devastating turn of events, Malawi's Vice President Saulos Chilima, a prominent figure with presidential aspirations, tragically lost his life in a plane crash. The ill-fated aircraft, a 37-year-old Malawi Defence Force Dornier 228 turboprop, took off from Lilongwe en route to Mzuzu but met a fatal end in the hilly and forested terrain.
The news of the crash was confirmed by President Lazarus Chakwera, who announced that all ten passengers onboard, including Chilima, had perished upon impact. The wreckage was discovered in the rugged hills of Chikangawa Forest, marking a somber day for the nation.
Chilima, at 51 years old, was a dynamic and influential political figure, particularly popular among Malawi's youth. His potential candidacy for the presidency in the upcoming elections had positioned him as a significant player in the country's political landscape. Despite not publicly declaring his intent to run, his impact on Malawi's politics was undeniable.
An accomplished economist and former telecommunications executive, Chilima entered politics in 2014 and swiftly rose to become the country's youngest vice president after being elected as Peter Mutharika's running mate. However, a falling out with Mutharika led Chilima to depart from the ruling party in 2018, citing concerns over corruption.
Forming his United Transformation Movement party, Chilima contested the 2019 elections, finishing third behind Mutharika and Chakwera. Following a legal challenge and subsequent fresh elections in 2020, Chilima assumed the role of vice president in the Chakwera-led government.
However, his tenure was not without controversy. In 2022, Chakwera distanced himself from Chilima after the vice president was implicated in a corruption investigation involving state contracts. Despite facing charges and arrest, Chilima maintained his innocence, and the case against him was eventually dropped earlier this year.
The untimely demise of Saulos Chilima has sent shockwaves through Malawi, marking the end of a promising political career and leaving a void in the country's leadership. As the nation mourns the loss of a charismatic leader, the future of Malawian politics is cast into uncertainty.
