In a strategic move to bolster its presence in the electric vehicle (EV) market, Toyota Motor Corp. has announced plans to construct an electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant in Fukuoka, the southernmost island of Japan. The facility, to be operated by Toyota's subsidiary, Primearth EV Energy, is set to receive government subsidies to support its development, as reported by the Nikkei.

While not confirming the specifics of the report, a spokesperson from Toyota stated that the company is actively working on enhancing its production capacity for EV batteries. This initiative aligns with Toyota's commitment made last year to sell 1.5 million battery EVs annually by 2026 and increase this number to 3.5 million by 2030. Over the years, Toyota, despite being the world's leading carmaker, has faced criticism for its slow embrace of EVs, which has hindered its competitiveness against frontrunners like China's BYD Co. and Tesla Inc., led by Elon Musk.

Notably, Toyota has been emphasizing its luxury brand, Lexus, as a cornerstone of its EV strategy. However, the firm has recently encountered challenges as the demand for hybrids surged again and competition intensified in the Chinese market. The proposed battery plant would be situated in close proximity to Toyota's Miyata plant, known for producing 430,000 vehicles annually under the Lexus brand, with a significant proportion being exported to various regions worldwide. This strategic location could potentially streamline the production and export processes, positioning Toyota to capitalize on the growing demand for electric vehicles in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
