In a strategic move to enhance competitiveness against Chinese manufacturers, Renault SA has revealed the R4 E-Tech compact electric vehicle at the prestigious Paris auto show. Priced at under €35,000 ($38,252), the R4 E-Tech is a plug-in iteration of the iconic economy car that garnered immense popularity for the brand during the 1960s. Production of the R4 will take place in Maubeuge, France, with its motor and battery components being sourced from nearby facilities.
Head of product performance at Renault, Bruno Vanel, expressed pride in this achievement stating, "It’s a big accomplishment, and allows us to put French flags everywhere in the car." Sales for the R4 E-Tech are set to commence in the first half of the upcoming year. Renault's introduction of affordable EV models is in response to a market slowdown triggered by subsidy reductions, resulting in increased costs for electric vehicle ownership. CEO Luca de Meo has been advocating for locally manufactured electric vehicles to better position the company against expanding Chinese competition in the region.
The announcement comes shortly after the European Union's decision to heighten tariffs on EV imports from China, potentially reaching up to 45%. French President Emmanuel Macron's amendments to EV subsidy regulations exclude most models produced in China, supporting domestically manufactured EVs like the R4 E-Tech. Boasting a driving range of 400 kilometers (249 miles) on a single charge, the R4 incorporates advanced features such as a bidirectional charger and a ChatGPT-infused digital assistant. Constructed on a shared platform with the R5, another budget-friendly EV unveiled earlier this year, the R4 aims to combine the nostalgic charm of its predecessor with contemporary technology, providing ample space for a family.
Looking ahead, Renault has plans in place to expand its portfolio of affordable electric vehicles. An electric variant of the Twingo is expected to join the lineup in 2026, priced around €20,000. CEO De Meo emphasizes the significance of agility and adaptability in the current automotive landscape, reaffirming the brand's commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility.
