Chancellor Rachel Reeves has decided to delay the planned review of workplace pensions, in a strategic move to alleviate additional pressure on UK businesses reeling from the recent hike in national insurance contributions. Originally set to launch before the year-end, the review has now been postponed indefinitely following concerns raised by individuals familiar with the matter.

The Department of Work and Pensions' proposal, aimed at addressing issues surrounding inadequate retirement savings, has been put on hold as Reeves seeks to ease the burden on businesses. This decision comes in the wake of criticism directed at the Chancellor for the controversial £40 billion tax increase through higher national insurance contributions for employees.

The second phase of the pensions review, which was set to focus on the auto-enrolment rules currently at 8% of qualifying earnings (with a minimum of 3% covered by employers), has been halted. Despite calls from experts for higher contribution rates to ensure sufficient retirement incomes for pensioners, the review now remains in limbo.

Earlier this year, the Phoenix Group estimated that increasing the contribution rate to 12% could potentially inject an additional £10 billion annually into pension savings. In a separate development, Reeves had previously announced plans to consolidate £1.3 trillion of pension savings into 'megafunds', with the objective of fostering investment in UK infrastructure projects and startups.
