In a surprising turn of events, U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has reported a significant 8.8% increase in sales in China, reaching a record-breaking number of over 657,000 cars sold in 2024. This outstanding performance in the fiercely competitive Chinese market comes at a time when Tesla experienced its first-ever global decline in annual deliveries.

The data reveals that Tesla's sales surged by 12.8% in December to an all-time high of 83,000 units, closing the year on a strong note. Notably, China accounted for 36.7% of Tesla's total global sales, securing its position as the company's second-largest market. However, despite the remarkable success in China, Tesla's global deliveries fell short by 1.1%, contradicting CEO Elon Musk's earlier projections of a slight growth. The decline was attributed to various factors such as reduced European subsidies, a shift in the U.S. market towards lower-priced hybrid vehicles, and intensified competition, particularly from Chinese automaker BYD.

Moreover, Tesla faced challenges with its China-made EV sales, including a 24% drop in exports to Europe. Despite this setback, China still remains a beacon of growth in the EV sector, accounting for a significant portion of global sales of electric vehicles and hybrids. The continuous growth in China stands in contrast to the slowdown observed in other major markets around the world.

While Tesla's global deliveries declined, the company managed to maintain its lead over BYD in terms of overall sales, with 1.79 million cars delivered worldwide. BYD, on the other hand, reported a 12.1% growth in EV sales, reaching 1.76 million units globally. This intensifying competition has led Tesla to downsize its global workforce and make strategic adjustments in its sales operations in China.

As a price war escalates in the Chinese EV market, Tesla has introduced discounts and financing options to attract customers, including a 10,000 yuan discount on loans for the Model Y and zero-interest financing for select models. On the other hand, BYD has employed aggressive cost-cutting strategies and experienced a significant rise in overseas shipments, albeit falling slightly short of its export target for 2024.

Looking ahead, the dynamics of the global EV market continue to evolve, with China playing a pivotal role in driving growth and innovation. As Tesla navigates challenges and opportunities in various markets, the competition with BYD and other key players is expected to intensify, setting the stage for an exciting year ahead in the world of electric vehicles.
