Lotte Energy Materials Corp., a subsidiary of South Korean conglomerate Lotte Group, has set its sights on capturing a 30% share of the global copper foil market for electric vehicle (EV) batteries within the next five years. The company's CEO, Kim Yeon-seop, expressed his optimism during a press conference in Seoul, stating that the increase in battery production by EV manufacturers will contribute to the growth of the copper foil market, which is currently experiencing oversupply.
Kim anticipates that the demand for copper foil will surge, reaching 2.2 million metric tons by 2030, compared to the current 500,000 tons, driven by the rapid expansion of the EV market. He emphasized that the growth will primarily be fueled by the demand for high-end, ultra-thin, higher-strength, and higher-elongation foils.
Lotte Energy Materials aims to secure orders worth 20 trillion won ($15.3 billion) by 2025. Kim highlighted that automakers are likely to adopt high-end copper foil to enhance the performance of lithium-iron-phosphate batteries. To accommodate this anticipated surge in demand, Lotte Energy Materials plans to increase its global production capacity from 60,000 tons in 2023 to approximately 240,000 tons by 2028. The company is currently exploring potential locations for a new plant, including North America and Spain.
In addition to its focus on copper foil, Lotte Energy Materials is actively involved in the development of advanced battery technologies. The company aims to pilot solid-state electrolytes by 2024, as well as pioneer next-generation silicon anodes and assembly lines for mass production of LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) cathodes.
However, Lotte Energy Materials faced challenges in the first quarter, posting a loss due to a decline in orders from customers in China and increased operating costs in South Korea. Despite this setback, the company remains determined to establish itself as a significant player in the EV battery component market.
Lotte Group, the parent company, has been investing heavily in key components for EV batteries as it seeks to catch up with its South Korean peers, LG Group, Samsung, and Hyundai Motor Group.
Overall, Lotte Energy Materials is poised to take advantage of the growing EV market by positioning itself as a leading producer of copper foil, while also investing in advanced battery technologies to meet the future demands of the industry.
