Orange juice prices have soared to a record high as concerns grow over the impact of citrus greening disease in Florida, the leading producer of oranges in the US, as well as its potential impact on the citrus crop in Brazil, the top exporter of orange juice. This rising concern comes amidst a global shortage of orange supplies.

Experts predict that the risk of disease spreading further in Florida is high, which means the chances of a significant increase in production for the upcoming season are limited. Judy Ganes, President of J. Ganes Consulting, emphasized that disease prevalence is also increasing in Brazil, raising long-term concerns for their orange crops.

As a result, orange juice futures hit the exchange limit of 10 cents early in New York trading, indicating the strong market response to this worrying situation. The US Department of Agriculture's July 20 report predicts a 1.7% decline in orange juice exports from Brazil to the US compared to last year.

The surge in prices has led to a sharp decline in sales volume. Consumption of orange juice in the US has dropped to its lowest level in at least five years. Retail prices have also experienced a significant increase, with prices peaking at nearly $9 per gallon in July, up from less than $8 per gallon a year ago. This data, compiled by Nielsen and published by the Florida Department of Citrus, suggests that consumers are starting to take notice and are refraining from purchasing orange juice.

Judy Ganes highlights the concern that once consumers turn away from a product, they may not come back. This decline in consumption could have long-lasting consequences for the orange juice industry. As the prices continue to rise and the disease spreads, it is uncertain how the industry will recover from this setback.
