China, according to a report released by the US State Department's Global Engagement Center, is a "leading concern" for spreading false information and propaganda around the world. The report, spanning 81 pages, accuses China of investing billions of dollars annually to improve its global image. It highlights China's tactics of sponsoring online influencers, exporting "smart cities" technology to authoritarian governments, and suppressing dissenting voices.

The report underscores China's focus on Africa, Asia, and Latin America. It claims that China pays for favorable media coverage in East Africa while hiding its sponsorship. Additionally, China attempts to gain significant control over Pakistan's media, pressuring newspapers to retract content and exerting diplomatic pressure on universities. These actions, if left unchecked, could reshape the global information landscape and potentially lead nations to prioritize Beijing's interests over their own economic and security concerns.

The report also raises concerns about China's support for "digital authoritarians" through the export of digital infrastructure and surveillance capabilities, as well as its impact on global freedom of expression. Local governments, fearing the wrath of China, have reportedly limited their expression and freedom to avoid provoking the Chinese government.

China has consistently refuted allegations of improper influence on other nations. In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, China accused the US government of engaging in large-scale cyber espionage against other countries and attempting to infiltrate their cyber systems under the guise of capacity-building cooperation.

As the US and China engage in ongoing diplomatic discussions, this report sheds light on the multifaceted strategies employed by China to shape global information and exert influence internationally. It emphasizes the need for increased awareness and vigilance against disinformation and propaganda campaigns, particularly those orchestrated by state actors like China.
