Israel has announced that 13 more of its soldiers have lost their lives in clashes with Hamas in Gaza as the country intensifies its efforts to eradicate the militant group that controls the Palestinian enclave. The Israeli military made several announcements on Wednesday, although the specific dates of the soldiers' deaths were not disclosed. The soldiers, all men aged between 19 and 24, were listed by the Israel Defense Forces as the latest casualties in the ongoing conflict.
With these recent fatalities, the total number of Israeli military deaths since the ground operations began in Gaza over the weekend has reached 15. Infantry troops are engaged in a fierce battle with militants, receiving support from tanks and armored vehicles. The Israel Defense Forces spokesperson described the troops as moving strategically, employing large amounts of firepower and intelligence.
As the ground operations focus primarily on Gaza City in the northern part of the strip, Israel has been calling on Palestinian civilians to evacuate to the south for their safety. According to Israeli reports, around 800,000 people have responded to this call and relocated. Gaza has an estimated population of over 2 million people, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the world.
Israel and Egypt have placed a near-total blockade on Gaza, only allowing small amounts of aid to enter through the Rafah crossing. In response, Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist group by the US and other nations, announced on Wednesday that they would permit injured Palestinians and foreigners to leave Gaza and enter Egypt. The blockade has dramatically limited access to essential supplies and resources for the people of Gaza.
The current conflict originated from Hamas militants launching an attack on southern Israel on October 7th, resulting in the deaths of 1,400 individuals, including many children. In retaliation, Israel launched extensive airstrikes on Gaza, which Palestinian officials claim have resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians.
This incursion into Gaza marks Israel's first major military operation since 2014 when nearly 70 Israeli soldiers were killed during the campaign. As the conflict continues, the international community is closely monitoring the situation and calls for an immediate ceasefire have intensified. The loss of lives on both sides is a tragic reminder of the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
