Apple Inc. is facing its weakest start to a year since 2019, putting its longstanding position as the world's most valuable stock by market value at risk. The tech giant, based in Cupertino, California, has held this title since July 2022. However, the company's stock has plummeted this year, following two ratings downgrades and concerns over a weak macro environment in China that's pressuring iPhone demand. As a result, Apple's lead over fellow tech titan Microsoft Corp. has dwindled, with the gap now less than $100 billion.
In the regular trading session on Friday, Apple shares wavered between gains and losses. If the stock manages to end the day on a higher note, it will break a four-day losing streak. Nonetheless, the company has already witnessed a staggering $164 billion in market value erased since the start of the year. Although the first week of January has seen bigger percentage declines, the sheer magnitude of the market value destruction is unprecedented for the beginning of a year.
According to Gene Munster, Managing Partner of Deepwater Asset Management, investors are recognizing the rarity of two ratings downgrades ahead of an earnings report. Munster, who has been covering Apple for a long time, notes that he has never witnessed this scenario before. The downgrades have clearly impacted investor sentiment, causing concerns about Apple's future performance.
In addition to the ratings downgrades, Apple is likely facing pressure as investors realign their portfolios at the start of the year. A trend known as the "January effect" often sees investors selling their winners from the previous year and buying underperforming stocks. This portfolio rebalancing can create additional downward pressure on Apple's stock, despite its strong performance in recent years.
As a result of these challenges, Apple's market value has dwindled to approximately $2.84 trillion, edging closer to Microsoft's market value of $2.76 trillion. While Apple faces headwinds, Microsoft has benefited from the artificial intelligence trade that has captivated Wall Street over the past year. As OpenAI's largest shareholder, Microsoft has invested a significant amount in the ChatGPT parent, amounting to about $13 billion. This investment has contributed to Microsoft's steady performance and kept it within striking distance of Apple's crown.
Overall, the start of this year has proved to be tumultuous for Apple, with significant market value losses and mounting competition from Microsoft. The company's upcoming earnings report will hold significant weight in determining whether Apple can regain its footing and restore investor confidence. In the meantime, it remains to be seen how these developments will shape the battle for the title of the world's most valuable stock.
