BMW AG revealed the Concept Skytop at the esteemed Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance in Italy, located on the famed Lake Como. This model diverges from the slew of hi-tech vehicles recently introduced by BMW in Asia, such as the completely electric Neue Klasse SUV.
Making a bold move back to traditional internal combustion engines, the Concept Skytop, an open-top two-seater, boasts BMW's most potent V-8 engine. The specifics on the engine were withheld by a BMW representative, but to provide some context, we know that the BMW M8 Coupe, which is powered by the same kind of engine, delivers 617 horsepower.
In the past, other concept models have made their debut at the renowned car event, including a V-6 coupe concept launched in 2023 and the Garmisch, a reincarnation of a 1970's Marcello Gandini-styled car revealed in 2019.
Despite its foray into nostalgic combustion engines, BMW's commitment to electric vehicles remains strong, with 15% of deliveries in the previous year being EVs, a number that is projected to rise to 20% this year. BMW predicts to sell a staggering half a million EVs across its brands with a portfolio of 15 models. This is in stark contrast to apparent slowdown in EV sales experienced by competitors like Tesla Inc. and Volkswagen AG.
The Concept Skytop fits perfectly into the classic car-focused, BMW-sponsored event by the lake. Design cues are borrowed from past iconic models, featuring a sharklike front and roadster style reminiscent of the Z8 made from 1998 to 2003, and a simple single line running across its sides that harks back to the rounded 503, BMW's premier postwar sports coupe.
However, questions remain as to whether the Concept Skytop will transition from concept to production status. Regardless of its future, there's no denying its impressive current form - featuring small tabs as door handles, a leather-adorned roll-bar behind the seats, and a retracted rear window, all contributing to a sense of spaciousness in the cockpit. Despite the showstopper presentation at the grand Italian event, BMW continues to remain tight-lipped over additional performance details or specifications.
