In a move to prioritize safety, Tesla has announced a recall of more than 27,000 Cybertrucks in the United States due to concerns over delayed rear-view camera images that could potentially compromise driver visibility and elevate the risk of accidents. This marks the fifth recall issued by Tesla for the 2024 Cybertruck models since the beginning of the year. To address this issue, Tesla will be providing a software update.
This significant recall affects the majority of U.S. Cybertrucks and stands as the largest one among the five recalls for the electric truck in 2024. Previous recalls this year were issued to rectify a loose accelerator pedal pad in April and problems with windshield wipers and exterior trim in June. The Cybertruck, which debuted in November 2023 after a lengthy delay due to production challenges and battery-supply limitations, has encountered a series of setbacks.
Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, introduced the Blade Runner-inspired Cybertruck as a means to revitalize the company's product line amidst a decrease in demand for electric vehicles. Investors closely monitor any issues with the model, given the substantial resources Tesla has dedicated to its development.
The automaker identified that the system in the affected Cybertrucks may experience a delay in displaying the rear-view image due to an incomplete shutdown process before rebooting is initiated. Although Tesla has received 45 warranty claims and four field reports possibly related to this recall, there have been no reports of accidents, fatalities, or injuries associated with this specific issue.
According to a report filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the rear-view image may not appear within two seconds when the vehicle is put in reverse, and the display may remain blank for six to eight seconds after shifting into reverse. Tesla is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of Cybertruck owners by addressing this technical glitch promptly.
