In the ever-evolving smartphone industry, major mobile manufacturers are determined to capture the attention that was once reserved solely for Apple's groundbreaking iPhone releases. With the pace of innovation slowing down in recent years, companies like Samsung, Oppo, Huawei, and Honor have turned their sights towards a common strategy: foldable phones. These devices promise users double the screen real estate while maintaining the compact size of a regular smartphone.

The appeal of foldables lies in their ability to enhance multitasking, improve typing comfort, and provide a more natural reading experience. For smartphone manufacturers, foldable devices serve as a way to differentiate themselves from competitors and entice consumers to invest in premium features, potentially leading to higher profit margins. This is a much-needed opportunity for phonemakers as the global smartphone market has been witnessing a decline for eight consecutive quarters, losing 7.8% of its sales in the three months ending in June, according to IDC.

Samsung has been at the forefront of foldable technology, investing heavily in research and development over the past decade. The company has pioneered advancements in hinges, display technology, and batteries to make foldables a viable product category. While the complexity of foldable devices drives up costs, Samsung has managed to price some of its models under $1,000 in 2021, marking the first time a premium foldable has been available below that threshold. The success of their Galaxy Z Flip, priced at $999, has contributed to the growing popularity of foldables, with Samsung expecting to sell its 30 millionth foldable phone this year.

Interestingly, Samsung has found that users who are on their second foldable device tend to be more satisfied than first-time users, suggesting that familiarity and loyalty develop over time. The company is also planning to introduce a more affordable foldable device in the near future, according to TM Roh, the head of Samsung's mobile business. Roh believes that more customers will choose foldables to adapt to the changing lifestyles of today, leading to increased competition and a healthier product category overall.

While Samsung has been leading the charge, other manufacturers have also made significant strides in the foldable space. Huawei, for example, emerged as China's leading brand for foldables last quarter, selling half a million units, according to IDC. Over the past five years, Huawei has released seven iterations of foldable phones, with their latest model, the Mate X5, weighing no more than an iPhone 14 Pro Max. This demonstrates that foldables can be on par with conventional devices in terms of weight.

However, conventional smartphones still hold certain advantages, such as accommodating larger camera arrays and offering perfectly uniform screens without creases. Durability concerns and the need for app adaptation also remain challenges for foldable devices. Despite these challenges, customers like Eiji Araki, an executive at a Japanese tech company, have embraced the immersive experiences that foldable phones offer. Araki switched to Google's Pixel Fold and found it to be a surprisingly normal device in its folded form, while providing an immersive experience when unfolded for tasks like reading books and watching videos.

With Apple yet to make its foray into the foldable market, mobile manufacturers have a chance to establish themselves and gain a foothold. As they continue to invest in research and development, foldables are poised for growth, with IDC estimating a more than 50% increase in global shipments this year. As the competition heats up, smartphone enthusiasts can look forward to an exciting future filled with innovative designs and improved functionality, all thanks to the rise of foldable devices.
