Tech billionaire Elon Musk is making headlines once again, this time with plans to establish a university in Austin, Texas. According to tax filings for his charity organization, The Foundation, Musk intends to allocate approximately $100 million towards this ambitious project. The institution will initially focus on a primary and secondary school with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum. Eventually, the university aims to offer education at the highest levels, providing students with a traditional curriculum along with hands-on learning experiences. The application for tax-exempt status, approved in March, states that the university will seek accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
While this may appear to be a new endeavor for Elon Musk, it's not his first foray into the world of education. About ten years ago, he founded Ad Astra, a school located on the SpaceX campus in California, specifically for his children and a few other students from the space company's employees. When Musk relocated to Texas in 2020, the school moved along with him.
Austin, renowned for being home to the main campus of the University of Texas, has become a hub of educational innovation. Another notable institution, the University of Austin, formed two years ago as an alternative to traditional US colleges, plans to open its doors this fall with an inaugural class of 100 students. The university has already secured funding of about $200 million from prominent individuals in academia and finance, including historian Niall Ferguson, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and venture capitalist Joe Lonsdale.
In the case of Musk's new STEM school, the plan is to commence with an initial class of 50 students and subsequently hire an executive director, teacher, and administrator. The Foundation's trustees consist of Jared Birchall, head of Musk's family office, Steven Chidester, a tax attorney at Withersworldwide, and Ronald Gong and Teresa Holland from Catalyst Family Office in California.
This university initiative comes amidst Musk's other grand plans. The billionaire is constructing his own town outside of Austin, which will include amenities such as recreational facilities, a school, and subsidized housing for employees of his companies Tesla, SpaceX, and the Boring Co. If approved, the municipality will occupy thousands of acres that Musk has acquired in the region.
With Musk currently holding the title of the world's richest person, boasting a net worth of $220.8 billion, his efforts in education and the establishment of a university reflect his dedication to advancing technological innovation and making a lasting impact on society. As the plans for this new university in Austin take shape, it's clear that Musk's vision extends beyond his accomplishments in the world of business and space exploration.
