The Spanish government is reportedly considering offering grants to Airbus SE, the multinational airplane and military equipment manufacturer, to support the expansion of one of its plants located near Albacete. Specifically, the plant in question is responsible for manufacturing helicopter parts. Discussions are underway to determine the feasibility of providing Airbus with a credit line to finance investments in the plant. However, the government is also examining how to structure this financial facility to ensure compliance with the state-aid rules of the World Trade Organization. It's important to note that no final decision has been made, and the loans may not be granted.

These discussions are the latest in a series of efforts by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's administration to encourage Airbus to increase its investments in Spain. This aligns with Sanchez's broader objectives of attracting industrial investments and boosting domestic armaments production. Currently, Spain owns a 4% stake in Airbus, while Germany and France each hold an 11% stake. Spanish officials have expressed frustration over what they perceive as insufficient investment by the company in their country.

The Defense Ministry, when contacted, did not provide any comments regarding these discussions. Airbus, on the other hand, acknowledged that they frequently engage with the Spanish Ministry of Defense due to their status as a major customer. However, the details of these discussions remain confidential. Airbus emphasized that all the tail booms for the entire range of Airbus helicopters are assembled in Spain, and any potential large contract would help secure and strengthen this workload. They also revealed plans for a new logistics Airbus Helicopters hub in Spain to commence operations in 2024.

It is worth mentioning that obtaining a credit line of this nature may require approval from the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union. However, the Commission has declined to comment on the matter thus far.

The plant near Albacete plays a crucial role in the production of rear sections for both civilian and military helicopters. Additionally, it is responsible for manufacturing the front and center fuselages for the NH90 military helicopter.

In late 2022, the Spanish government announced loans of €2.4 billion ($2.6 billion) to Airbus. Moreover, in March 2022, they revealed plans to allocate European Union recovery funds to a program focused on the aerospace industry, with Airbus potentially being the primary beneficiary of these funds.
