In the bustling streets of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat, voters flocked to polling stations on Tuesday in the third phase of India's extensive election process. Campaigning has intensified between the two main parties, with tensions running high as political rhetoric becomes increasingly acrimonious.

Modi, donning his signature saffron vest outside a polling station in Ahmedabad, urged supporters to turn out in large numbers and stay hydrated amidst sweltering temperatures across the country. The 73-year-old, seeking a historic third term in power, is campaigning on the BJP's platform of India's rapid economic growth and a pro-Hindu agenda. However, critics contend that this agenda has marginalized minorities, particularly Muslims.

Amidst the voting fervor, billionaire Gautam Adani, perceived to have close ties with Modi, cast his vote in Ahmedabad, affirming that India is on a path of progress and will continue to advance. The latest phase of elections also includes regions in Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka, with 93 seats in contention in the Lok Sabha, India's lower house of Parliament.

As the clock ticked towards the closing of polls, voter turnout stood at 60.19% by 5 p.m., slightly lower than previous phases. Concerns over the dip in participation prompted the Election Commission of India to take initiatives to boost voter engagement in the remaining five phases.

The political atmosphere has recently been charged with divisive rhetoric, as Modi and his allies have launched scathing attacks on the opposition, drawing criticism for statements deemed discriminatory. Accusations have been leveled, with the BJP suggesting that the Congress party would redistribute wealth to Muslims if voted to power. The Congress party, in turn, accuses the BJP of distorting their manifesto promises and has lodged complaints with authorities.

Modi, a prominent figure in Gujarat's political landscape, forged his career in the western state and served as chief minister from 2001 to 2014, focusing on a pro-business agenda. Despite facing backlash for the communal riots in 2002, he was cleared of wrongdoing by the Supreme Court. The BJP's dominance in Gujarat, winning all 26 seats in 2019 and 2014, sets the stage for another compelling electoral showdown in the state.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra witnesses a political upheaval as the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party find themselves embroiled in internal divisions, leading to conflicting loyalties and discord. With voting in full swing, all eyes are on the outcome of this phase, as India's journey towards electing its next government unfolds.
