Eli Lilly & Co. continues its expansion into the weight loss market with the acquisition of obesity drug startup, Versanis Bio, in a deal worth up to $2 billion. The main focus of Versanis is the development of an experimental drug called bimagrumab, which aims to help individuals lose weight while preserving their muscle mass.
Lilly's acquisition of Versanis highlights the growing opportunity that pharmaceutical companies see in the obesity market, following the success of drugs like Novo Nordisk's Wegovy. Lilly is actively seeking approval for its diabetes drug, Mounjaro, as a treatment for obesity, and their drug retatrutide has shown promising weight-loss results in recent studies.
Versanis, founded in 2021, licensed bimagrumab from Novartis, which had initially tested the drug for muscle-wasting diseases. While the results did not meet Novartis' expectations, the company did observe weight loss as a potential benefit of the compound. The emergence of obesity as a priority for pharmaceutical companies stemmed from the regulatory approval of Wegovy and Lilly's release of notable weight-loss data for Mounjaro.
Versanis CEO Mark Pruzanski emphasized the importance of timing, stating that the company was established just before the surge of innovation and competition in the obesity market. Bimagrumab has shown promise in reducing overall body weight in individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes. However, side effects such as diarrhea and muscle spasms have been reported in a significant percentage of patients treated.
Unlike drugs like Wegovy that work in the brain to suppress appetite, bimagrumab works directly on tissues to decrease fat and increase muscle, without requiring changes in food intake. Versanis believes that this unique approach could result in more sustainable and higher quality weight loss, particularly when combined with GLP-1 drugs. Mid-stage trial results are expected next year, and the company plans to study the combination of bimagrumab with Lilly's Mounjaro.
In conclusion, Lilly's acquisition of Versanis underscores the growing interest in the obesity market among pharmaceutical companies. By adding bimagrumab to their portfolio, Lilly aims to offer innovative weight loss solutions that target muscle preservation, providing a differentiated option for individuals struggling with obesity.
