Charter Communications Inc. has announced that it will be raising the price of its broadband service by $5 starting in August. This comes as the cable giant reported virtually no revenue growth in the second quarter and is facing challenges from the continued loss of TV customers and the upcoming expiration of the promotional period for its free mobile service.
The increase in broadband prices is aimed at boosting Charter's top line and offsetting the potential losses from customer defections. Chief Financial Officer Jessica Fischer explained during a call with analysts that the company is facing "headwinds" and hopes that the price increase will help mitigate those challenges.
In the second quarter, Charter reported revenue of $13.66 billion, falling short of the Wall Street estimate of $13.84 billion. This marks the end of at least 10 years of single-digit or better sales growth for the company. As a result, the company's shares declined by about 2%.
It's important to note that the price hike will not apply to customers on promotional plans. Additionally, Charter will be introducing a new autopay discount of $5, which could offset the price increase for some customers.
Despite its revenue struggles, Charter did see some positive growth in other areas. The company added 77,000 broadband customers and 648,000 mobile phone lines in the second quarter. However, it also lost 200,000 TV customers.
Charter's cable peer, Comcast Corp., also experienced losses in TV and internet customers during the same period. The cable industry as a whole has been grappling with difficulties in acquiring new subscribers, partially due to a slowdown in US home sales. Additionally, competition from wireless companies offering lower-priced internet access has led to a loss of market share for the cable industry.
In conclusion, Charter Communications Inc. is raising its broadband rates in order to boost its revenue and counter the challenges it faces in customer retention and market competition. The price increase, along with the introduction of an autopay discount, aims to offset potential losses and maintain the company's financial stability in a changing landscape.
