Lucas Helmke, a 33-year-old accountant and father from Brisbane, has set a new world record for the most push-ups completed within one hour. Helmke completed an incredible 3,208 push-ups, surpassing the previous record of 3,182 set by fellow Australian Daniel Scali in April 2022. The feat, achieved at the Iron Underground gym in November last year, was recently verified and approved by Guinness World Records.
Helmke's motivation for attempting the record was to inspire his one-year-old son and show him that "nothing is impossible." He spent two to three years building up the physical strength required to perform the feat, adhering to strict form guidelines to ensure each push-up was flawless. Helmke was required to keep his body straight on his way up, without bending his knees and waist, while reaching at least a 90-degree angle at the elbow when he lowered himself.
Despite being docked for improper form on 34 push-ups, Helmke's performance still saw him surpass three previous record holders, all of whom were also Australian. However, the competition for this particular record is fierce, with an American man named Rob Stirling claiming to have completed 3,264 push-ups in March of this year. So far, Stirling's claim has yet to be verified and approved by Guinness World Records.
