Stellantis Chairman, John Elkann, has dismissed rumors of a potential merger with French automaker Renault. Responding to recent press speculation, Elkann stated that Stellantis, the owner of Peugeot and the world's third-largest carmaker by sales, is solely focused on implementing its long-term business plan and has no plans for merger operations with other manufacturers. This statement comes amidst increasing speculation about a potential tie-up between Stellantis and Renault, as the latter faces challenges in the electric vehicle market and recently canceled IPO plans for its EV and software unit, Ampere.

Renault, which is partially owned by the French government and has seen a financial recovery in recent years, has been considered a possible merger target. However, Elkann's denial suggests that Stellantis is not currently pursuing any such deal. Stellantis, formed through the merger of PSA and Fiat Chrysler, has become one of the most profitable players in the industry with a market capitalization of over €67 billion. On the other hand, Renault's market capitalization remains relatively low at just above €10 billion, despite its financial improvements.

Speculation about a potential merger between Stellantis and Renault gained traction following a report in the Italian daily newspaper Il Messaggero, which claimed that the French government was studying plans for a merger between the two automakers. However, both Renault and the French Finance Ministry declined to comment on these rumors. Stellantis has had a strained relationship with the Italian government in the past, with accusations of acting against the national interest. This has led to discussions about potential Italian government involvement in Stellantis to balance French influence.

While Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares recently mentioned the group's readiness for consolidation, analysts question the rationale behind a Stellantis-Renault merger. Such a merger would further expand the group's excess capacity in Europe, and Renault, led by Luca de Meo, may not offer significant scale in other parts of the world. Additionally, the deal could face antitrust obstacles.

For now, it seems that Stellantis is not actively pursuing a merger with Renault. However, the dynamics of the evolving automotive industry and the need for consolidation to adapt to new challenges may prompt further discussions and potential partnerships in the future.
